How to Maintain Your Garbage Disposal

Posted on

If you are dealing with frequent clogging of your garbage disposal or it is starting to smell, you can avoid it in the future by maintaining it. By paying close attention to your garbage disposal, you will reduce problems you experience and go longer periods of time without needing repairs.

Know What Not to Put Down the Sink

There are some items that can destroy your garbage disposal over time and lead to a higher risk of clogs. You should always know what items never go down the sink and into the garbage disposal. First of all, don't put down hard skins from fruits and vegetables. These are hard on your garbage disposal and might require it to be replaced prematurely. This includes potato peelings and banana peels. It is also not a good idea to put eggshells or coffee grounds into the disposal as they turn into granular waste that can cause clogs.

Clean the Garbage Disposal

Part of maintaining your garbage disposal includes keeping it clean. If you smell a bad odor, it is probably time to clean it. Clean out the drain and disposal by pouring in a small amount of baking soda followed by vinegar into the drain. Let it sit for a few minutes in the disposal hopper. These ingredients will combine together and start foaming. Once you see the foam, turn on your faucet and rinse it away with hot water. Now put in a few pieces of lemon or orange peels with some ice cubes. Turn on the water and the garbage disposal to let them clean the disposal.

Make sure you never try to use bleach to clean your garbage disposal. Bleach hardens grease and can cause a major drain clog in the main line.

Using the Garbage Disposal the Right Way

When operating the disposal, always run water for a few seconds before you use it, while it is on, and for a few seconds after you turn it off. To run efficiently, a garbage disposal needs to be turned on and used on a regular basis. Even if you don't need to use it, try to turn it on at least once a day. It is also better for the garbage disposal to use it with cold water, not hot water. Run it for a few seconds longer than you think you need to.

With these tips, you will have a clean and well-maintained garbage disposal. For more information, consult a professional like Absolutely Clear Sewers & Plumbing Service.
